YOUR WEDDING HAIR, BUT EXTRA: THE BRIDAL GUIDE TO CLIP-IN HAIR EXTENSIONS
The Good Hair Club, Volume 2
Let's talk about the best-kept secret in bridal hair. That gorgeous, full, bouncy wedding hair you've been saving on Instagram or TikTok? There's a very high chance some of it was clipped in. Hair extensions are the quiet heroes of the bridal world: they add volume, length, and staying power. Clip-in hair extensions can be placed exactly where your hairstyle needs them and nobody has to know they're there.

WHO SHOULD WEAR EXTENSIONS ON THEIR WEDDING DAY?
Honestly? Almost everyone. It's your big day, so be a little extra. But extensions really shine for you if:
Your hair doesn't hold a curl. If your curls usually give up by lunch, extensions add structural texture that your hair lacks to help your style hold its shape.
You have low density, or you just want more. Extensions fill in fine or thin areas and give wedding hairstyles that full, photo-ready look.
You want longer hair. Dreaming of long, romantic waves down your back? Extensions get you there without years of patience.
HOW TO SHOP FOR HAIR EXTENSIONS
I've curated some affordable clip-in extension options so you don't have to scroll through a hundred listings wondering which ones are legit. My picks are conveniently available on Amazon and at Ulta. Bonus: shopping at Ulta means you rack up Ultimate Rewards points, so your bridal hair is technically earning you free stuff.
Whichever you choose, here's what to look for.
100% HUMAN HAIR. NO SYNTHETIC. EVER.
This is the one rule I won't bend. Synthetic extensions are made from plastic fibers, and on a wedding day, plastic is not your friend:
They don't love heat. Synthetic fibers can frizz, singe, or melt under a curling iron, so they won't hold the curls we're working so hard for.
They look different from your hair. Synthetic hair has a shiny, doll-like finish that stands out next to real hair, especially under a photographer's flash.
They don't move the same. They tangle easily and don't blend or fall naturally with your own hair.
Human hair extensions behave like your own hair. They take heat, hold a curl, blend seamlessly, and can be reused for anniversary dinners, birthdays, and every "I want to feel fancy" night after.
COLOR MATCHING: CLOSE IS GOOD
Here's some good news: your color match doesn't have to be perfect. As long as the shade is close, slight differences actually add dimension once the extensions are blended into your hairstyle, like built-in highlights and lowlights.
A few tips:
Match to your ends, not your roots. The extensions sit under and blend into the lengths of your hair, so that's the color to match.
Check in natural daylight. Bathroom lighting lies.
Not sure? Send me a photo. I'm happy to help you choose.
Do your best, but don't lose sleep over it.
HOW MANY GRAMS DO YOU NEED?
When it comes to extensions, size matters, and it's measured in grams.
Just for curl support: 120 to 150 grams is plenty.
For length or added density: go for at least 170 grams.
If you're adding length, don't skimp. Too little hair spread over too much length leaves the ends looking thin and straggly, and nobody wants a wispy ending on their wedding day.
HOW TO PREP YOUR EXTENSIONS BEFORE YOUR BRIDAL HAIR PREVIEW
This step is non-negotiable, and it's the one most brides skip. Order your extensions early enough to prep them before your hair preview so we can test them on the real thing.
WHY YOU NEED TO WASH THEM FIRST
New extensions usually come coated in silicone or another conditioning finish that makes them look extra shiny and silky in the package. Pretty in the box, but a problem on your head. That coating makes the hair slippery, so curls slide right out and pins have a hard time gripping. Washing removes it and lets the hair hold a style like it should.
HOW TO WASH THEM
Gently brush each weft from the ends up.
Rinse with lukewarm water, keeping the hair flowing downward so it doesn't tangle.
Wash with a shampoo… clarifying shampoo is best. Put some shampoo into a bowl or bucket with warm water. Gently swoosh the extensions around in the water while holding the hair by the clips so they don’t get tangled. Let them soak.
Rinse thoroughly under the faucet or shower head, holding at the clips and letting the water rinse downward. Apply a lightweight conditioner to the ends only.
Rinse again and gently press out the water with a towel. No wringing or twisting.
HOW TO DRY THEM
Lay each weft flat on a clean towel and let it air dry completely. Here's the important part: wash and dry your extensions at least a few days before you need them, not the day before and definitely not the morning of. The wefts and the hair closest to the clips hold onto moisture longer than you'd think, and damp extensions won't hold a curl. Giving them a few days means they're fully dry, ready to style, and one less thing on your wedding week to do list.
HOW TO STORE YOUR EXTENSIONS
Treat your extensions like the investment they are:
Brush them gently before putting them away.
Lay them flat in order, from widest weft to smallest, so placement is quick on the big day.
Store them in the original box, a satin bag, or an extension hanger, somewhere cool and dry, away from humidity and direct sun.
Bring them to your bridal hair preview so we can style with them and have a full vision of how wedding day will look. On your wedding day, they'll be prepped, ready, and waiting for their moment.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Clip-in hair extensions are one of the easiest ways to make your wedding hair fuller, longer, and longer-lasting. Choose 100% human hair, get the color close, buy enough grams, and prep them early. I'll handle the rest.
